HISTORY
12th CENTURY CISTERCIAN ABBEY
l'Abbaye du Palais, its full name being « Abbaye du Palais de Notre Dame »
was founded by Bernard Clairvaux in the twelfth century.
Unfortunately, only mysterious ruins remain from that time, but certain twelfth century elements can still be found in the strict Cistercian architecture. The way the outlying buildings are placed around the central monastery is the same as all abbeys.
At the end of the eighteenth century the central building, that had been destroyed during the French revolution, was rebuilt, especially the dormitory area.
Today, the bed and breakfast is situated in those remains.
In the Abbaye du Palais' library you can find several books about the Cistercian Order and l'Abbaye du Palais de Notre Dame.

From Bourganeuf take the RD 941 towards Guéret/Clermont-Ferrand. Leave Bourganeuf, pass the picnic area and turn left onto the RD 940A in the direction of Bosmoreau-les-Mines.
l’Abbaye du Palais is situated on this road after 4 km on your right hand side, just before a bison breeding (blue gate).
At the entrance please follow the driveway all the way to the entrance of the main building at the courtyard (and yes, all cars can pass the gate). You can drop your luggage here before parking the car at the parking lot.
