L’Abbaye
du Palais de Notre Dame,
or l’Abbaye du Palais for short, was established under the
supervision of Bernard of Clervaux at the start of the 12th century. Of
the original buildings hardly anything remains, but since Cistercian
architecture was closely followed, it is possible to reconstruct what
the abbey must have looked like in those days. The floor plan of all
Cistercian abbeys is largely identical.
During
the French Revolution the main building was destroyed. It housed the
chapter room on the first and the dormitory on the second floor. At the
end of the 18th century it was rebuilt. The main building
now accommodates the “chambres d’hôtes” .
